10 1/2 is one part of 'Group Project' initiated by designer Itay Ohaly for the exhibition 'The Machine' C-Mine in Genk, Belgium. Three objects were created by nine designers. Each object was divided into three parts, and each designer was assigned a part. Alongside this brief, each designer was provided with history and research about the coal mine (C-Mine) in Genk where the exhibition would be taking place. Each designer created their own piece alone, without interacting with the other designers until the pieces were put together.
Studio Agata Karolina was asked to design the back rest of the chair.
10 1/2 was influenced by the stories of the miners who worked the coal mine in Genk. Miners were forced to constantly carry their tools with them in the mines due to freak accidents and difficult working conditions. Often the axes swinging from their waists resulted in many injuries from poor lighting conditions and minimal moving space.
Studio Agata Karolina created this back rest as a result of this condition.
